Why I Started Counseling for Men
The Short version:
I started Counseling for Men because men need a place to talk real. Men don’t come to counseling. But we all need a buddy to talk with. That’s what this is. I’m just one man on a mission to get other men to deal with the crap they like ignore but probably need to talk about.
The Long Version:
I grew up in Akron. My parents were addicts for most of my upbringing so I grew up with a lot of family and friends. I missed 100 days of school in the 8th grade – something I wrote about for Yahoo and OZY. I lived in three different houses on the same street and saw more drugs and violence than any kid ever should. My 8th grade report card says I only passed one class – Art. And I got a D. I went to college but failed out my first year. Went back and graduated from a top 50 university. This is only by the grace of God.
Today, I still live in Akron because the Lord keeps me here. I’m married with one son, Rodney Long III. He’s my best friend and I know I don’t want him to go through any of the things I did. I pray he has parents who stay together and he grows up without knowing any drugs or violence. So I do everything I can to make that happen.
But I still face work stress, relationship problems, life issues – just like everyone else. And it wasn’t until I started getting totally honest about my struggles that I started feeling better about them and doing something about them.
That’s why I started Counseling for Men. If you have more questions, please visit rodneylongjr.com.
